Simple instructions

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching game. Remove every tile by pairing free tiles with matching symbols.

1

Find a Free Tile

A tile must have no tile above it and an open left or right side.

2

Select a Match

Choose two identical free tiles. Flowers match Flowers and Seasons match Seasons.

3

Open the Layout

Remove upper and outside tiles to reveal blocked pieces deeper inside the board.

4

Clear Every Tile

Keep matching pairs until the board is empty. Use Hint, Undo or Shuffle when needed.

Mahjong Solitaire Tips for a Better Game

Mahjong Solitaire rewards patience and planning. The first available pair is not always the best choice, especially when another pair can uncover several new tiles.

This browser game uses Mahjong-style tiles but is different from the traditional four-player game of Mahjong.

What Makes a Tile Free?

A free tile has nothing resting above it and has an open left or right side. Visible does not always mean selectable. The game dims blocked tiles and disables them so you can focus on valid choices.

Open the Highest Layers First

Raised tiles often block several pieces beneath them. Removing a matching pair from an upper layer can create more choices than clearing two exposed tiles along the bottom edge.

Watch Identical Sets Carefully

Some symbols appear more than twice. When several identical tiles are free, consider which pair opens the board most effectively. Saving one copy for a tile that is still trapped can prevent a difficult position later.

Flowers and Seasons Match by Group

Flower tiles may match other Flower tiles even when their symbols differ. Season tiles work the same way. Normal games always include Flowers, while Hard games include both Flowers and Seasons.

Every New Board Has a Solution Path

Each board is created from a legal reverse-removal sequence. This gives every fresh game at least one complete solution path. A poor sequence of choices may still leave you stuck, but Undo and Shuffle are available.

Restart Restores the Original Board

Restart returns every tile to the exact position and symbol it had when the current game began. This remains true even after using Shuffle. New Game creates an entirely new arrangement.

Choose the Layout That Fits Your Mood

Open Garden is broad and easy to read. Turtle adds a raised center and more blocked tiles. Pyramid uses several layers and rewards careful planning. Difficulty controls the board size and tile variety.

Make the Board Comfortable

The board scales to the available screen width so phone and tablet users can view the layout without excessive horizontal scrolling. Senior Mode enlarges surrounding text and controls and can slightly enlarge the board on wider screens.
