What is a hearing-friendly caption phone?

A caption phone works much like a regular home phone, but it also displays the other caller’s words as readable text. The user can listen through the handset or speaker while following the conversation on the screen.

This is different from a standard amplified phone. An amplified phone makes sound louder, while a caption phone adds live text. Some caption phones provide both features.

Do not confuse amplification with captioning

A phone described as loud, amplified or hearing-aid compatible does not automatically provide captions. A true caption phone must display the other caller’s speech as text on a screen.
