Play Chess Online at Your Own Pace

Chess does not have to feel rushed. This version is designed for comfortable browser play with large pieces, visible legal moves, clear status messages, a hint button, and the option to undo a move.

You play the White pieces and always move first. After you make a legal move, the computer responds with Black. Start on Easy while you get comfortable, then move to Medium or Hard when you want more of a challenge.

There is no countdown clock. Study the board for as long as you like before deciding what to do next.

How Each Chess Piece Moves

If it has been a while since you played, these six reminders are enough to get started again.

♙ Pawn

Moves forward one square, or two from its starting position. Pawns capture one square diagonally forward.

♖ Rook

Moves any number of open squares forward, backward, left, or right.

♘ Knight

Moves in an L shape and can jump over other pieces.

♗ Bishop

Moves diagonally across any number of open squares.

♕ Queen

Moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally across open squares.

♔ King

Moves one square in any direction. Keep your king out of check.

Simple Chess Tips for Beginners

Control the center

Center pieces usually have more options and influence more of the board.

Develop your pieces

Bring your knights and bishops into play instead of repeatedly moving one piece.

Protect your king

Castling can move your king toward safety while activating one of your rooks.

Look before capturing

Before taking a piece, check whether your opponent can immediately take yours.

Check the whole board

Threats are easy to miss when you focus only on one corner of the board.

Use a hint when stuck

The Hint button suggests a legal move without forcing you to play it.
