Planning for the future is one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones. Whether you’re just getting started or reviewing your current plans, this simple checklist will help you get organized, protect your wishes, and make things easier for your family.
Why Estate Planning Matters
Estate planning isn’t just for the wealthy. It’s about making sure your wishes are honored, your assets are protected, and your loved ones are cared for—no matter what the future holds. A good plan gives peace of mind for you and your family.
Estate Planning: Step-by-Step Checklist
Use this checklist as a guide. Tackle one item at a time, and ask for help if you need it. You don’t have to do everything in a single day!
1. Create or Update Your Will
List who will inherit your property and belongings.
Name an executor (someone you trust to manage your estate).
2. Consider a Living Trust
Helps avoid probate and manage assets if you become unable to do so yourself.
3. Appoint Power of Attorney
Choose someone to handle finances if you can’t.
Consider a separate healthcare power of attorney for medical decisions.
4. Prepare Advance Directives
Write down your wishes for medical care (living will, DNR orders).
Share with your doctor and family.
5. Designate Beneficiaries
Check and update beneficiaries on life insurance, retirement accounts, and bank accounts.
6. Gather Important Documents
Deeds, vehicle titles, insurance policies, birth/marriage certificates, Social Security card, military records, etc.
Keep copies in a safe place, and tell a trusted loved one where to find them.
7. Make a List of Digital Assets & Passwords
List email accounts, online banking, and social media.
Provide access instructions for your executor.
8. Review Plans Regularly
Revisit your documents after major life events (marriage, divorce, move, new grandchild, etc.).
Update as needed.

Talk with your family and those named in your documents about your plans.
